This is very rare Beaded Modoc,
Baskets beaded in this
fashion are very rare.
I have seen maybe 4 or 5 in 20 years. Most are damaged.
This one has larger beads and is in good
condition.
One or 2 stitches on the rim are only slightly damaged.

Atsugewi basket in
pristine condition
This late 19th century, circa, pristine Atsugewi
basket is of white beargrass & red bud full twist. Twined overlay with
willow foundation and pine root start at bottom of basket (as described by a
curator at the Sutter Fort Museum in Sacramento.) Please note "white
dot" appears on left side of basket. This is on the film not on the
basket.
It was part of a collection from the estate of an
early prominent California family, Francis Smith. Please see San Jose
