Hickox BasketsElizabeth Conrad Hickox
(1872-1947) and her daughter Louise Bernice Hickox (1896-1962) lived near Somes Bar
on the Klamath River in northwestern California.
Elizabeth and Louise produced highly individualized baskets and attracted the patronage
of Grace Nicholson, a Pasadena curio dealer, who purchased their work from 1908 until
1934.
In February 1948 Nicholson became ill; she died on 31 August at the age of 70. Her
secretaries, Estelle Bynum and Thyra Maxwell, managed her collection, continuing to
dispose of the inventory.
In 1950 they split the collection. Maxwell also received Nicholsons papers for a
planned biography but because of illness was unable to complete it.
In 1968, she donated the papers to the Huntington Library and negotiated with Fredrick
Dockstader to sell her remaining Hickox baskets to the Museum of the American Indian.
Bynums collection traveled to northern California to be disposed only recently.
